WEEKLY REFLECTION | Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, September 4, 2022

Today’s reading from the Epistle to Philemon contains some unusual features. In a world that all too often doesn’t seem to be interested in anything except what benefits the self, Paul is praising Philemon for his love and concern for other people. Second, the message was so important to Paul that he wrote it himself.

Romans 1210

WEEKLY REFLECTION | Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, August 21, 2022

Without change, our power to make an impact on the world is dissipated.  And instead of saying, “See, how much they love each other,” as the early Romans said about the early Christians, the world will say, “See how much they bite each other. Juneteenth Holiday

WEEKLY REFLECTION | Second Sunday After Pentecost, June 19, 2022

This Sunday is not only the second Sunday after Pentecost, but it is also Juneteenth. “Just what is that?” you ask?  Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Two and a half YEARS to get the liberating and soul-saving word that people who had been enslaved their whole lives were now free!  But for many people of color, even today, 159 years since President Lincoln’s Proclamation, true equality is still a dream.
