St. Margaret's Episcopal Church

WEEKLY REFLECTION | Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost, October 16, 2022

Some of us have to live paycheck-to-paycheck. And some of us are fortunate enough to have money in savings.  But it is a fact of life that we all need money to survive in this world.  While St. Margaret’s is all about our spiritual lives, even a church needs money to keep the lights on, the heat when it’s cold, the air-conditioning when it’s hot and humid, and to pay staff, who also need money to survive.

Our Book of Common Prayer recognizes this. On page 445, we read:

The Minister of the Congregation is directed to instruct the people, from
time to time, about the duty of Christian parents to make prudent
provision for the well-being of their families, and of all persons to make
wills, while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their
temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for
religious and charitable uses.

If we love our families, we do what we can to make sure they are as secure as possible.  We also love our church. So, it makes sense to do what we can to give the church a secure future—another way to offer a secure spiritual home to our families.

Dave Leber and Andy Werner, our Treasurer, have put together a description of some of the ways we might consider supporting St. Margaret’s, in addition to our regular annual giving.  They are both willing to talk with us about what they call “generosity planning”.   Some of these items are longer-term, but in the event that you are 72 or older and want to do something in the near future, you can consider saving taxes by having RMDs (Required Minimum Distribution) sent to St. Margaret’s. Please do be in touch with Dave or Andy if you would like to discuss these topics.
