WEEKLY REFLECTION | The Sixth Sunday of Easter, May 9, 2021

Last year was a difficult one. And this winter seemed particularly long and dreary to me. More than one of us commented that we felt like we had been in Lent the whole time.  Being “cooped up”, as my mother used to say, is not very pleasant. But now, golden-green baby leaves are popping out on the trees, fruit trees are blossoming, and every kind of spring flower is exploding out of the slowly warming earth.  Some of us have even dared Mother Nature and have put out plants in our gardens.

We approach this Passion/Palm Sunday 2021 with a long season of suffering behind us. It is fitting and appropriate that we are grieving, angry, and hold deep sorrow for our nation. We are called, as disciples of Jesus, to also be persons who break the cycle of violence. May this Holy Week be one where we suffer with Christ as we walk with him to Jerusalem.

But when they cry to him he hears them.”These verses apply to those in physical hunger and poverty. But as sure as these words of the Psalmist speak to physical poverty and hunger, they ALSO absolutely speak to SPIRITUAL poverty and hunger.
