Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost - St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Emmaus, PA

WEEKLY REFLECTION | Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, September 12, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters of St. Margaret’s!

This week’s Collect is one of my favorites:

O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.”

And St. Mark’s Gospel Reading is so powerful as it tells the story of Peter’s confession that Jesus is Lord – the Messiah:

“Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”

And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” Jesus asked them, “But who do YOU say that I am?”

Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.”

I believe that each of us needs to personally answer Jesus’ question to us:  Who do you say that I am?

We are followers of Jesus, we worship together, we are members of St. Margaret’s faith community, we pray for one another, we try to model our lives after the teachings of Jesus.  All of this is true.

But, when asked the question of WHO is Jesus, how do you respond?  How do I respond? Who do you say that Jesus is?

I pose this question to you for meditation and prayer this week.  In prayer and supplication, pray about this important question.  Discuss it at your dinner table. Talk about it with friends.  It is the most important question in our lives.

My friends, may we continue to be one in the Spirit. And let us continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
