God's Will

WEEKLY REFLECTION | Ninth Sunday after Pentecost, August 7, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those

things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may

by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ

our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

for ever and ever. Amen. (The Collect)

I can hardly think of a prayer more appropriate to every circumstance in our lives. It’s not included in the usual Morning and Evening Prayer templates, but it certainly could be. For that matter, it’s a prayer I might like to say morning, evening AND whenever I need to make a decision.

A long time ago, a spiritual director asked me to define what would make me happy, as a way of plotting a course for my life and career. As I pondered it, I realized that what would make me happy was literally to do God’s will. Oh, not because I was particularly good or devout, or even because I thought I should want to do God’s will. Looking back over my life, I realized that when I did God’s will, things turned out well and I was happy. No guarantees, of course, that they would turn out the way I thought they should, but usually, they were far better than I could have imagined. And when I ignored God’s leading, most frequently the results were not very satisfactory. And sometimes, downright awful.

Doing the will of the God who loves us and only longs to do good for us is eminently pragmatic, even beyond the invitations in Scripture and in our faith to follow God’s way. Truly, we cannot live without God, who daily creates us and creates for us all we need in order to live.

God give us the grace to hear the Still, Small Voice of the Spirit leading us and the will to follow!

Joy to you **all** as we **all** continue to worship and serve together!
