Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I think we’ve been brainwashed by the liturgical calendar! At least, I know that I, and some others of us, have.
As we move through autumn, and particularly when we have cool, gray, drizzly days, sitting quietly, gazing out the window, remembrances of our beloved ones who have gone to God begin to surface. Not that we ever forget them, but perhaps we think of them more, often in a bittersweet way, at this time of the year.
The world outside helps, with all the Hallowee’en decorations and advertisements. And let’s not forget candy corn and jelly pumpkins—if you are innocent of these dainties, stop by the snack spot at church. By mid-October, we begin to think about Hallow-tide: All Hallow’s Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Historically, we celebrated for eight days, an “octave”. Although that’s gone out of custom, I still do. And I think it’s especially important for those of us who grieve to have a time set aside to acknowledge both our love and our sadness.
We especially look forward to commemorating our family and friends on All Saints Sunday. We wear white at that service, because they now reside with God, surrounded by the Resurrection Light of Christ. We light candles to honor that fact and we wear white because we rejoice for them.
If you would like to have people commemorated at the November 2 service, please fill out one of the attached forms or email the information to me, so we can get them on the Necrology list. PLEASE PRINT because although you know how their names are spelled, we might not if they’re not legible. Deadline for adding to the list is OCTOBER 22. We need to make the list early, because Lynne will be on vacation.
May they rejoice in the Light of Christ!
Praying daily with you, for our nation, our diocese, our parishes, and the world,
Mo. Laura
