Dear Brothers and Sisters,
If you look carefully at the post mark on the envelope, you will see it is coming to you from Albany, NY. I miss you all and think of you every day! Bonnie Baron has kindly created another reflection so you will have one of the almost-weekly letters in your mailbox (or email box). Thank you, Bonnie! As always, if any of you would like to write for the St. Margaret’s, please be in touch with me. We all enjoy hearing different voices!
Don’t give up being aware of God’s presence!

Bible Journaling with Bonnie Baron
A favorite illustrator of mine, Mary Engelbreit, created a poster titled “Draw Near to
God,” inspired by James 4:8 (NRSVUE Bible), “Draw near to God, and he will draw near
to you.” The artwork shows a young red-haired girl seated beneath a tree with a
sketchpad and pencil. Her artwork serves as a gentle reminder that turning your
attention toward God—especially in moments of struggle or amidst the hustle of daily
life—can bring comfort, peace, and a renewed sense of hope.
As a new way for me to read Scripture and reflect on meaningful passages in a creative
way this summer is Bible Journaling. I have begun illustrating in a wide-margin Bible,
(NRSVUE) Artisan Collection Bible) as seen in the six-week course I am currently
taking, and an accompanying collage notebook using colored pencils, stickers,
calligraphy pens, pictures, etc. from Life: Beautiful Magazine
https://www.lifebeautifulmagazine.com.
Although the term “bible journaling” does not appear in the Bible, there are numerous
examples and principles that encourage recording Scripture, prayers, and spiritual
reflections. Engaging in this practice can deepen your relationship with God, help you
remember His works, and foster growth in wisdom. Proverbs 4:7 (NRSVUE) states “The
beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom, and whatever else you get, get insight.”
Journaling serves as a valuable tool for processing lessons and deepening one’s
understanding, aligning well with this principle.
Once you have our Bible, and various tools to get started, you can explore many online
resources to become more familiar with the process. As you progress you can add to
your toolbox of supplies.
The resources I have used have been well thought out to enrich your spiritual journey
and help you honor God through Bible journaling.
1.My primary resource is a six-week Bible Journaling Course taught by Rev. Adelyn
Tyler-Williams Associate Rector for Worship and Discipleship at St. Columba’s
Episcopal Church on The Hive, a wellness and spiritual community created by Rev. Dr.
Hillary Raining. https://www.thehiveapiary.com/bible-journaling.
2.Bible Journaling Ministries has various items for free to download that you can cut and
paste in your Bible.

3.Hey Creative Sister (https://heycreativesister.com) offers a free resource library that I
accessed simply by signing up with my name and email address. The site serves as a
blog and knowledge base focused on Bible journaling inspiration. It features examples
from a variety of artists, utilizing a wide range of styles—from illustrated faith to
innovative mixed media approaches. https://heycreativesister.com
Gospel Grounded reminds us that Bible journaling is about engaging with God’s Word,
not creating perfect art. To set the tone, create a quiet space, and play meditative
music. As you reflect on Scripture, express your faith in whatever way feels
meaningful—whether through elaborate drawings, hand-lettering, simple notes,
underlining, or writing out prayers. The true purpose is spiritual growth, not artistic skill.
God delights in your desire to spend time with HIM, regardless of how your journaling
looks.
The prayer below is intended to help quiet your mind from daily distractions and seek
guidance from God’s heart as you begin your Bible journaling.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of Your Word—living, active, and full of truth. As I open my Bible
today, quiet my heart and clear my mind so I can hear Your voice.
Guide my thoughts, inspire my creativity, and help me see the beauty of Your promises
in a fresh way.
Let every note, color, and reflection draw me closer to You and deepen my
understanding of Your love.
May this time not just be art or words on a page, but worship that honors You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
