Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I am sure that most of you are aware of the many cuts in government funding that are taking place nationwide. Some of us have been holding our breaths and awaiting, with great concern, the effects on food insecurity. Lynn Kokolus, who is our liaison to the food bank, sent me this heartbreaking note. I know that sometimes the media exaggerates things, and I’m attaching a link to the Morning Call article. But as Lynn says, “I have seen it for myself.”
Lynn’s comments:
The food scarcity due to funding cuts has hit Second Harvest as reported. Yesterday we only received suspicious avocados and limp parsley. The farmers no longer have subsides to give us their excess produce. Faith Presbyterian has a garden and they donated some tomatoes, cukes, zukes and some eggplants. Not enough. I think I am going to go heavy on canned fruit and veggies for my donations. I wonder what they will want for September.
Please contact your legislators to ask that they take immediate action to help hungry families. After working with Deacon Liz at Trinity Bethlehem’s Soup Kitchen for 20 years, I promise you that it is unbearable suffering for people not to be able to feed their children and families.
We will gather your offerings and bless them on Sunday. And Lynn will take them over to the Food Bank. Every little bit helps.
Praying daily with you, for our nation, our parishes, and the world,
Mo. Laura
