My dearest family and friends of St. Margaret’s,
I write to you the day after the Inauguration with a heart full of thanksgiving that we witnessed the peaceful transfer of power and that it was devoid of violence. Whatever one’s political views, I know we can all be on our knees in thanksgiving that all went peacefully. The great symbols of our democracy were on glorious display at the Capitol and the Mall. Let us pray for our elected leaders for wisdom and safety as they follow their call to public service.
This week’s gospel reading (Mark 1:14-20) continues with the great call stories – of Jesus giving the invitation to “follow him”. In this reading, the invitation is to Simon and Andrew and also James and John, sons of Zebedee. All were fisherman – all were going about their daily lives.
Jesus’ invitation to follow him changed everything for these men. Their lives would never be the same. Jesus said this to them: “The kingdom of God has come near”.
Indeed, the kingdom of God has come near. And IS near! It is in our next breath – the Holy Spirit is NEAR – in and around us. Each of us are called by God – in ways that are as unique as we are. Let us rejoice in these call stories. Reflect upon your own call story – how God is calling you each day to be the individual God created you to be.
And, please continue to observe strict adherence to Covid safety guidelines. I know many of us are grieving for loved ones who have died. Let us bind our hearts together in prayer and love for one another – supporting one another – leaning on one another. I thank God every day for our beloved St. Margaret’s community.
Be safe, be well, be YOU! BLESSINGS to each of you,
Jane +
Prayers for National Life and Sound Government
from the Book of Common Prayer (p.821)
O Lord our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we
may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to
other nations of the earth.
To the President and members of the Cabinet, to Governors
of States, Mayors of Cities, and to all in administrative
authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their
duties.
To Senators and Representatives, and those who make our
laws in States, Cities, and Towns, give courage, wisdom, and
foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to
fulfill our obligations in the community of nations.
To the Judges and officers of our Courts give understanding
and integrity, that human rights may be safeguarded and
justice served.
And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to
accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they
may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for
the well-being of our society; that we may serve you
faithfully in our generation and honor your holy Name.
For yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as
head above all. Amen.
