WEEKLY REFLECTION | Day of Pentecost, May 23, 2021

Dearest Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On the Day of Pentecost, we remember the pouring out of God’s Spirit upon the disciples.  After Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, God promised not to leave us comfortless or bereft.  God sent the Holy Spirit to descend upon us and give us the consolation, joy and unconditional love of God’s presence with us.

The Spirit of God – the Holy Spirit has existed always.  The Triune God has always existed and will forever exist – “as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be”.

We live in a world that is often dispirited – of sadness and of fear.  But we are a people who have the Great Comforter to invigorate us to see the world as Our Lord envisions it.  A world of wonder and love.

We are never alone. We are supported and enlivened by the presence of the Holy Spirit who is working in, through and among us. Praise be to God!

I write this letter to you this day from Seattle where I am visiting family.  It is a glorious area – with water all around – lakes, sounds and oceans.  And lush forests and gardens.  And snow-peaked mountains – the tallest being Mount Rainier which has an elevation of 14,400 feet.  To call it majestic is a huge understatement.  It has been a mountain-top experience being here with my daughter, son-in-law and 20-month-old granddaughter whom I hadn’t seen in 17 months.

My time away has been Spirit-filled and refreshing after the long Covid shutdown.  During these last few days, the CDC has made more modifications on wearing masks and lessening the use of them.  I intend to keep wearing a mask for many months in order to keep safe.  There will be, no doubt, more information and updates coming from Diocesan House as to a reopening time; but I believe it is safe to say that we will be proceeding very cautiously.

My friends, may we continue to be one in the Spirit. And let us pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
