That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus.
Jesus himself drew near. - Luke 24:13-35.

In a sense, we could say that the whole of our life is spent walking the road to Emmaus. Perhaps Jesus many times has come near to us as well, to accompany us on the way. Yet we have failed to acknowledge his presence, our eyes, too, need to be opened so that we might recognize him.
Perhaps today you can do a particular kind of self-examination.
Can you think of a time, or perhaps many times, when you have felt that you were all alone on your life's way?
Did you want it to be that way? ("I can do this myself, thank you!") Or, did you seek help from a friend or an advisor? (I know now that I can’t go through this all alone. I need someone to help me.)
In your prayers did you try to invite Christ to accompany you through the difficult time?
In the community of your church, did you ask a priest or a fellow parishioner to help you?
Someone had gone through a long and difficult time in his life. Trying to recover from it, trying to move beyond his sorrow, anger, and despair, he cried out: "Where were you, God, when my heart was breaking?" And he heard the gentle, quiet response: "I was there the whole time, breaking in your heart."
